[NAMES]
NAMES ▶
One's true name holds an immense amount of power within the walls of the Seven Horrors High School. . . both for the spooks that are trying to kill you, and your fellow captives. Giving out one's true name to literally anyone– be they friend or foe– comes with certain. . . consequences.
Anyone who holds someone else's true name can use that name to compel the other person to do whatever it is they want that person to do. It is basically a mind/body compulsion spell! As an example: Damian knows Tom's real name, and wants Tom to bake him a cake. All he has to do is say Tom's name, followed by the command of "bake me a cake," and Tom will have no choice but to bake Damian a cake. . . whether he wants to or not! This spell can also be used to control someone's thoughts and feelings– to make someone fall in love, or stop them from being angry, or have them forget their most important CR. There are basically no limits on what a character can force another to do with their true name.
One can only imagine what the horrors haunting the school would do if they knew a character's true name, right. . .? Right???
If this seems like a heavy consequence for sharing one's true name, well. . . it is intended to be! ICly, it is heavily discouraged for characters to share their true names with each other. This IC mechanic is the only thing really stopping them from doing so, though. OOCly, maybe it's a sign of AMAZING CR for your character to trust another enough to share their real names, and you want them to share that secret as a sign of that good CR development. Or maybe you OOCly enjoy RPing with this kind of dynamic. The true name mechanic is not meant to be restrictive, but rather give players another layer to their CR– for good or bad!
It is also not meant to be a way to control another player's character OOCly. While there are no IC limits to this magic, OOCly, please communicate with another player before compelling their character to do anything! DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES, HAVE YOUR CHARACTER COMPEL ANOTHER TO DO SOMETHING THE PLAYER IS NOT OOCLY COMFORTABLE WITH!! Even if it's IC for your character! OOC comfort with this mechanic is paramount, and crossing the boundaries of OOC comfort is grounds for an immediate booting from the game.
If, for any reason, you find yourself in a situation where OOCly you're not comfortable with what another character has compelled yours to do, and talking to the player has not helped, please let me know! I think this could be a really fun mechanic to play with, but only if players are chill about it OOCly.
So basically: just be chill. Talk to people! Don't use ICness as an excuse to make someone do something they don't wanna play with OOCly! DON'T BE A DICK!!!
What counts as a true name?
Any name the character went by in canon. This includes things like code names or Servant names (Caster, Saber, etc).
What about canonmates? Will they automatically know each other's true names?
This is player choice! If all players agree, an apped canonmate can enter the game knowing their canonmate's true names, and thus be able to use the compulsion spell immediately. However, it is also possible for canonmates to arrive and completely forget the true names of their castmates. It is up to you and whatever you find to be the most fun! Just be sure to communicate about it beforehand.
My character knows another's true name but would not use the compulsion spell; can they still call the character by their true name?
Yes, of course. Using the spell requires intent. Sally can still call Bridget by her true name without invoking the spell if she has no intent of doing so.
