[SCHOOL SPOOKS]

SCHOOL SPOOKS
The school, of course, is haunted to hell and back! Some of the spooks like to keep their distance and stay hidden, while others can be found roaming the halls on a daily basis. Most of the spooks can be NPCed by players to bring a little flavor to your threads. I encourage you all to make use of this in order to help hammer home how dangerous the school setting is supposed to be!

That said, it is possible for characters to roam the school without running into any of these creatures. Rule of fun applies at all times, so follow your heart!

As a general rule: no ghost will be able to enter a protected area of the school. Right now, that includes the dormitories and the nurse's office. Even the friendly ghosts will be repelled from these areas!

A list of currently discovered spooks includes:

  • General Ghosts: Just your average, run-of-the mill ghost! That is, human spirits who meander the school's walls, lost and seeking solace in god knows what. They come dressed in many different garbs: some look like former students and school teachers, while others are wearing kimono, yukata, or even feudal-era armor. They tend to ignore you so long as they are also ignored, though they can and will phase through solid objects, coating said object in ice or sending a chill down a your spine. If perceived or addressed, they will let out an ear-splitting shriek and lunge at you, grabbing at whatever part of your body they can reach, leaving behind a handprint-shaped frostbite burn. It'll heal, but with some gnarly scarring! Once they grab you, the ghost will vanish into thin air.

  • The Kodama: These li'l guys! They live in the trees in both the forest and the school grounds, and can sometimes be found tending to the plants in the greenhouse (watering them, etc). They are very harmless but also very shy, so they'll immediately spook and run away when approached. However, if you destroy the plantlife around the school, they tend to get. . . a little angry! And will retaliate with small misfortunes. Like. . . dropping a wholeass tree on you.

  • The Nekomata: Ghostly cats that like to gather in small packs in the classrooms, though they can be found literally anywhere in the school. Touching them imparts on a character the desire for physical contact with another person (hand-holding, hair ruffling, innocent cuddling, etc). The Nekomata are harmless; but please let me know if your character attempts to hurt them.

  • The Jinmenken: Small dogs with the faces of humans! The breed of dog can vary, as do the faces. The dogs can and will take on the faces of a character's loved one, speaking in that same voice in order to lure them in and get them to lower their guard. They are hostile, and will attack characters after unnerving them with their voice and faces; the most they can do is bite and scratch, though. Like normal dogs! They are very weak creatures and can be easily killed and/or outpaced, should you run away from them instead.

  • Ghost Lanterns: Occasionally, characters will come across hallways or rooms that have paper lanterns strung out across the ceiling. They come in various shapes and colors, and are all lit with a tiny flame in the center. They seem innocuous, but walk underneath them, and the lanterns will suddenly split in two, revealing a mouth with jagged teeth and a face with black, beady eyes. They will descend upon characters and attempt to bite them! Despite their nature, they are. . . literally made of paper. . . so tearing them apart will dispatch them with ease. Mind the sharp and pointy bits, though!

  • Tsutsugamushi: Mukade. (cw: bugs!). They are not very active in the heat and live in the cool, shaded areas outside. Underneath the bleachers, around the greenhouse, in the underbrush of the forest, etc etc. Despite the creature from which they take inspiration, they are not poisonous! They are, however, very hostile. They tend to attack in packs, trying to swarm characters to bite off and devour every bit of flesh they can reach. Their bites are painful and may cause a bit of necrosis around the wound. So long as you are not being overwhelmed by a large swarm of these, they are just bugs! Easily killed! Squash them at will.

  • Raiju: Large, horse-sized creatures that live in the woods that flank the school. They look exactly like normal wolves, but their fur is pretty spiky, and their bodies hum with electricity. Touching one results in a very powerful shock that can stun a character for several minutes. They do not tend to attack on sight, but do get irritated the longer characters stay in the woods, or the closer they get to the grave at the edge. They are extremely dangerous; an encounter with one can and will lead to a character dying. They can be killed, but it will take a lot more than ordinary weapons to fell one, and nobody will be able to take them on alone. On the bright side, they will not leave the forest, so running away from them is a much better option.

  • Mischief Makers: Tiny human doll creatures! Their bodies are made of wood, and they move around like little marionettes. They are no bigger than like. . . a Barbie doll. They usually come in pairs (one boy and one girl) and like to cause mischief. They are not dangerous nor violent, but they will play pranks. They will try to steal things out of your pockets, or replace sugar with salt, or draw on the faces of anyone caught napping in public. They can be easily appeased with shiny objects and/or candy. While they are not hostile, please let me know if your character attempts to hurt them.

  • Hananko-san: Haunts the public bathrooms, she will appear overlaid across your reflection, her face buried in her hands as she openly weeps. Her hair is dark, tangled, and damp, as though she had drowned. Ignoring her does nothing; if you leave her alone, she will eventually leave. If you address her in any way, however. . . the mirror will crack and she will shriek, looking up at you with eyes red with bloody tears. She will then try to reach through the mirror to drag you into. . . whatever realm lies beyond! Currently she is unable to do this fully, since the bathroom mirrors are too small for you to fit through; she may drag you in up to your elbow, but no further than that. Any limb that dips into Hanako-san's mirror room will be covered in deep gashes. Ouch! Hanako-san is a fairly high-level ghost, and currently there is no way to combat her other than. . . just ignoring her.

  • Aka Manto: Haunts the public bathroom stalls. May show up randomly if you happen to open up the wrong one! They appear as a small, hunched over figure in a red cloak. Upon confronting them, they will ask for your favorite color. Answering "red" gets you stabbed by a knife! Non-fatal, but painful. Answering "blue" gets you strangled within an inch of your life. Also non-fatal, but that sure sucks! Answering with any other color gets nothing but silence, after which you should probably. . . leave. You can also just ignore the question entirely and close the bathroom stall on them. They won't bother you if you do! Aka Manto is another high-level ghost; it cannot be harmed by conventional weapons (it appears to be incorporeal to them) and there is currently no way to exorcise it or kill it. But if you just. . . pretend it isn't there, then you'll be okay!

  • Soot Sprites: Tiny little sprites that reside in the kitchen! They are the ones responsible for making the mediocre cafeteria food. Sorry it's only mid-tier; they are just little guys. What more do you expect from them?? Now that the kitchen is open, they welcome visitors, and will speak to characters in tiny little voices. The only thing they're really talk about is food, though. It's impossible to hold a real conversation with them. While they are inherently harmless, please let me know if your character attempts to harm a soot sprite.

  • Yosuzume: The outdoor walls of the school are now occupied by sparrows! Demon sparrows? Eh. Semantics. From afar they look like just ordinary birds, and they tend to keep their distance from most of the student body. The only time they seem to get agitated is when someone scales the school walls. Then they will begin to fly in large hordes, dive bombing and pecking at you, trying to make you fall back to the ground again. They chirp things like danger! and beware! if you get too close to the rooftop. It looks like they might be warning you away from something. . . ? Or maybe protecting whatever is up there? It's hard to say! Please let me know if your character attempts to harm a yosuzume.

Below, you can find a list of ghosts who have been perceived, but have yet to make themselves known. You can NPC these guys to the extent described below, but more about them will be revealed later!

  • The Cafeteria Ghost: Apparently, the head chef-- the cafeteria ghost-- is just twenty or so tiny soot sprites piloting a chef's hat. Weird! But also kind of cute? They are incredibly friendly towards the student body and would welcome any visitors to the cafeteria and/or kitchen! If anyone acts out of line in their domain, however, the head chef is capable of delivering unto them a tiny electric shock. Don't misbehave in front of the chef! While harmless and friendly, please let me know if your character attempts to harm the head chef. Seems particularly fond of Kenkou.

  • The Library Ghost: The keeper of the books! For now, the exact spirit in charge of the library has yet to be revealed. . . but if characters attempt to leave the library without checking out a book, they will be violently thrown against the wall and pinned there for a few short seconds. It is currently not known what happens if one persists in trying to steal a book, or if they forget to return one before the due date.

  • The Music Room Ghost: Staring into the window of the music room for too long causes the melody playing from beyond to take on the form of a song familiar to you. Something that yanks at the heartstrings, sad and forlorn. Stare even longer than that. . . and something ominous will slam against the window, shadowy hand prints pressed against the glass, door buckling with impact. Whatever it is. . . it vanishes an instant later. Has been heard asking for help from various player characters.

  • The Nurse's Office Ghost: Is there a ghost in the nurse's office. . . ? Well, someone had to dispense this ice pack, right? The nurse's ghost is currently invisible and cannot be spoken to at will, but any injured character may sometimes feel a gentle caress against their cheek while taking care of themselves in the nurse's office. The nurse's ghost will also accept and eat food offerings, usually leaving something like a box of bandages for the kind soul in return. Seems particular fond of Anzen!

  • The Auditorium Ghost: A ghost that speaks to you by gouging words into the walls; fresh blood bleeds from these wounds in the school's sheetrock, drying permanently against its surroundings.

Beyond that, there are some spooks that are vital to the plot of the game. These are mod-controlled only! And yes, they have been perceived:

  • If you're hallucinating dolls, spiders, threads, or sewing needles,, then you have the attention of [???].

  • If you're hallucinating train tracks or fog with a flashing red light in the distance, then say hello to [???].

  • If you're hallucinating blue or red flames, smoke and ash, then give [???] a hearty hello.

  • If you're hallucinating scissors, blood or stitches, then that's [???] giving you a greeting.

  • If you're hallucinating comforting and warm red thread, then [???] is smiling at you.

  • If you're hallucinating spider lilies and blood, then you've caught [???]'s eye.

More spooks will be unlocked as the game progresses, of course! Sometimes events or even your setting explorations may stir one out of hiding. But for now! This is your list! Please enjoy being haunted to your heart's desire.
